Gangotri is a town and a Nagar Panchayat in Uttarkashi district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. It is a Hindu pilgrim town on the bank of river Bhagirathi and origin of river Ganges.
How to Reach Gangotri From Delhi By Road
If you are going to Gangotri for Gangotri to Gaumukh trek, then there are two routes by road which you can follow as per your choice.
Road Route 1. (via Haridwar) -> Delhi to Haridwar is (230km) – Rishikesh(28km) – Narendra Nagar(22km) – Tehri (55km)– Dharasu Bend (90km) – Uttarkashi (27km) – Bhatwari (32km) – Gangnani (16km)– Harsil (28km) – Gangotri (25km).
If you follow this route the total travelling by road is around 502Kms.
Now we will check how to reach Gangotri from Delhi using second road route
Road Route 2. (Via Dehradun) -> Delhi to Dehradun is (240Kms) – Mussorie(34Kms) – Chamba (57Kms) – Tehri (11Kms), after Tehri the route is same as the route no-1.
Total distance using route no-2 is 510Kms. So there is not much difference in both the routes so you can follow anyone. If you are planning to take a bath in Ganga river at Har ki Paudi at Haridwar before starting your trip to Gangotri and Gaumukh then Haridwar route is good.
If you have already visited Haridwar and wants to enjoy the natural beauty of Mussoorie then route via Dehradun is best.
How To Reach Gangotri From Delhi By Train
If you want to go by train, the first thing you need to know if there is no railway network availability after Dehradun. The routes from Dehradun are the same either you reach up to Dehradun by train or by road. You will be travelling through roads from Dehradun to Gangotri.
A similar case is with the route via Haridwar. The rail network is available only up to Rishikesh. After Rishikesh, you need to follow the same road route.
How To Reach Gangotri From Delhi By Flight
The nearest airport to Gangotri is Jolly Grant Airport which is located around at the distance of 250kms. This airport is well linked to Delhi and there are numbers of daily flights to Delhi which connects to major parts of the country. This place is well linked by roadways with Jolly Grant Airport or Dehradun Airport. After landing at the airport you can hire a taxi or take a bus for further road route.
How To Reach Gangotri From Delhi By Government Bus Transport Services
If you want to go by State transport bus service then you can board a bus from Anand Vihar Bus Terminal up to Dehradun. There is no direct bus between Dehradun and Gangotri is available to take a taxi from Dehradun to Rishikesh then take State Transport Bus from Rishikesh to Gangotri.
Or you can board the bus from Delhi to Rishikesh or Haridwar and then change the next bus from Rishikesh to Gangotri.
Things To Do In Gangotri
Gangotri is a very sacred place and very important for Hindu devotees as Hindus worship Ganga river which originates from Gangotri.
There are lot of temples like Gangotri Temple, Surya Kund, Bhagirath Shila, Maa Ganga Temple. These temples are very peaceful and beautiful. You can also enjoy the natural beauty and the beautiful locations all around.
After enjoying the Gangotri visit there is another place to visit nearby is Gaumukh. Gaumukh is a glacier and the exact origin place of river Ganga. The origin place looks like the mouth of a cow that’s why the name is Gaumukh (Cow’s mouth). This place is about 18km far from Gangotri and the only way to reach there is by trek on rough mountains and uneven paths. There is very low temperature and high altitude so please keep yourself physically fir in advance before the trek.
Useful Information For Tourists/Visitors
- Permission from DC office is required before starting the trek as permission letter will be checked at two different check posts in the trek way.
- Keep few necessary things in your bag packs like warm clothes, necessary medicines, trek shoes, raincoat, sunglasses and some dry fruits for the midway.
- Always keep around 10 photocopies of your identity documents for taking permissions wherever required.
- Food is good and available at very reasonable prices at that much height as well.
- There are two stays during the trek from Gangotri to Gaumukh, one is Chirwasa and other is Bhojwasa.
- Always start your trek in the early morning and don’t waste your time in the way as you have to return on the same day. There is no hotel or restaurant available, neither any population. The only thing is rock, mountains, cold breeze and jungle to entertain.
- Do not through any waste anywhere as it is a punishable crime.
